Building Up Of Social Image Plays A Contradictory Role In Spirituality?

Why does one make effort at all? Is it not to strengthen the image one has about oneself? This image building plays a contradictory role in spirituality and yet if one does not make any effort, there is a danger of going astray. Seeing this one wants to find some sort of balance. In this pursuit one intuitively feels a necessity of Guru. Is this right?
