Composed by Adi Shankaracharya, Mahishasura Mardini Stotram is a powerful hymn that glorifies Devi Durga hailed as the mighty slayer of the demon Mahishasura.

Ayi giri nandini nandita medini vishva vinodini nandanute,

Salutations to Goddess Mahishasura Mardini— The daughter of mountain (implying Himavanta), whose presence brought joy to the entire creation, the One praised by Nandi; Residing on the peaks of great Vindhya mountains, O Glory of Vishnu, the One revered by Indra. Who is none other than Bhagavati, the consort of the blue-throated One (Lord Shiva), divine mother of the Universe, Source of Abundance who does all the great things (related to creation, perseverance, and destruction)— Victory to you, victory to you, the destroyer of Mahishasura, the One with beautiful-braided hair— the beloved daughter of the mountain.

 

 

सुरवरवर्षिणि दुर्धरधर्षिणि दुर्मुखमर्षिणि हर्षरते

The One who bestows boons upon the demi-gods, who defeated the demon Durdhara, the destroyer of Durmukha, O Blissful One;

The One who nourishes the three worlds, who delights Lord Shankara, who frees us from evil thoughts, who is pleasured by war cries of demons rattled by Her acts. Who was angry at the sons of Danu (Danavas), furious at the offsprings of Diti (Daithyas), Who slayed the demon Durmada, O beloved daughter of the ocean. O Goddess Jagadamba— the mother of the Universe, who loves to live in the Kadamba Vana (forests of Kadamba tree), the One with the gentle smile who dwells in the midst of the temple existing on the top of the Himalayas – the crest jewel amongst mountains. O Devi, who slayed the best of enemy horses and elephants into hundreds of pieces along with their masters. The One who owns a Lion that possesses great valour and is severe in breaking the jaws and tearing the enemy elephants apart. The One who used her Bhujadanda (staff-like weapon) to slay the demons Chanda, Munda, and their army. अयि रणदुर्मद शत्रुवधोदित दुर्धरनिर्जर शक्तिभृते

दुरितदुरीह दुराशयदुर्मति दानवदुत कृतान्तमते

The One who held the war ground to fight the demons who were arrogant or foolishly prideful. O Devi— the One who is with immense power,

The One who had Great Lord Shiva by Her side, who is efficient, ingeniously thoughtful, excelled in all, as Her Messenger, who is also the Lord of Pramada-ganas. The One who destroyed the wicked thoughts of Danava Duta— Messenger of the sinful and evil-minded demon king Shumbha.

त्रिभुवनमस्तक शुलविरोधि शिरोऽधिकृतामल शुलकरे ।

O the Goddess, whose hands offer the protection and boons to the wives of enemies, who seek your protection. For those (demons) who caused trouble to Tribhuvanas, the One who holds spotless Trident pointed towards the opponents who cause great pain to the Three Worlds. The One with the effulgence of the Sun, propelled by the powerful sound of Dundubhi Drums. अयि निजहुङ्कृति मात्रनिराकृत धूम्रविलोचन धूम्रशते

समरविशोषित शोणितबीज समुद्भवशोणित बीजलते ।

O Goddess, the One who reduced the Demon Dhoomralochana into ashes by mere sound of Her Voice. Who weakened the demon Raktabeeja, whose blood when it fell on the earth acted as a seed and gave rise to a creeper of new Rajthabeeja. Whose great auspicious Sacrifice of Shumbha and Nishumbha satisfied Bhoota and Pishacha-ganas attending Lord Shiva. धनुरनुषङ्ग रणक्षणसङ्ग परिस्फुरदङ्ग नटत्कटके

कनकपिशङ्ग पृषत्कनिषङ्ग रसद्भटशृङ्ग हताबटुके ।

कृतचतुरङ्ग बलक्षितिरङ्ग घटद्बहुरङ्ग रटद्बटुके

जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते ॥ ८ ॥

 

dhanuranu sanga raňa kshaňa sanga parisphura danga naŤatkaŤake, kanaka pishanga prishatka nishanga rasadbhaŤa shringa hatãvaŤuke| 

krita chaturanga balakshiti ranga ghaŤadbahuranga raŤadbaŤuke, 

jaya jaya he mahishãsura mardini ramya kapardini shaila sute||8|| 

 

O Goddess, whose bangles and ornaments move following the motion of twanging of the bow and arrows that struck the enemy throats. Who killed a huge army of enemies with a shining sword, who carried a quiver marked with golden spots. Who transformed the battlefield of the fourfold army into a stage of colourful drama with screaming warriors. The One who is praised by the words Jaya Jaya, you and your stories are the ones who can be meditated upon doing Japa. The One who is praised by Stutis in various ways, O the mother of Universe. Who makes sounds like jhana-jhana by her anklets by which you delight the Lord of Ganas- Shiva. Who takes joy in dancing with Shiva in their half male and half female form (Ardhanarishwara). O Effulgent Beauty of Knowledge and Mind who is bright and shining. Whose face is like the moon which is cool and blossoms the lotuses by Her radiance; Who has gorgeous eyes that shine amongst

सहितमहाहव मल्लमतल्लिक मल्लितरल्लक मल्लरते

The One who enjoys the sport of the mighty battle, standing against skilled warriors. O, the one great at Malla yuddha— I bow down to you. Devi, who is surrounded by warriors and, with the help of forest dwellers, builds their huts from creepers. Whose body is soft like beautiful tender red leaves and blossoming jasmine flowers. अविरलगण्ड गलन्मदमेदुर मत्तमतङ्ग जराजपते

त्रिभुवनभुषण भूतकलानिधि रूपपयोनिधि राजसुते ।

अयि सुदतीजन लालसमानस मोहन मन्मथराजसुते

जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते ॥ १३ ॥

 

avirala gaňĎa galanmada medura matta mattangajarãjapate, 

tribhuvana bhooshaňa bhoota kalãnidhi roopa payonidhi rãja sute|

ayi suda teejana lãlasa mãnasa mohana manmatha rãja sute,

O the One as Goddess Matangi, who serves as the queen of the intoxicated elephants. The One whose body is like the radiance of the three worlds, who looks like the moon, the daughter of the milky ocean. Who enchants even Lord of Love, who captivates the desirous minds of beautiful girls. O Devi, whose firm Shining Forehead reflects the beautifully shimmering Lotus Petal. O, the One skilled in all the arts and surrounded by attendants, whose steps are followed by dancing swans. Whose charming Hair Locks combine Beauty and Sweetness of a Blue Water Lily and Bakula Flowers. करमुरलीरव वीजितकूजित लज्जितकोकिल मञ्जुमते

मिलितपुलिन्द मनोहरगुञ्जित रञ्जितशैल निकुञ्जगते ।

निजगणभूत महाशबरीगण सद्गुणसम्भृत केलितले

जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते ॥ १५ ॥

 

kara muralee rava veejita koojita lajjita kokila manjumate, 

milita pulinda manohara gunjita ranjita shaila nikunja gate|

The One who outshines the singing of the Koel bird 

with the sweet tunes from Her Flute. Who hums heart-melting songs while moving around in beautifully hued Mountain grooves. Who plays with the pure forest girls of good virtue— O Goddess, the One with a good heart, who joined her movements with the Pramada, Bhootas, Mahashabree Ganas, and others. कटितटपीत दुकूलविचित्र मयुखतिरस्कृत चन्द्ररुचे

प्रणतसुरासुर मौलिमणिस्फुर दंशुलसन्नख चन्द्ररुचे

kaŤi taŤa peeta dukoola vichitra mayookha tiraskrita chandra ruche, 

praňata surãsura mouli maňisphura danshula sannakha chandra ruche| 

jita kanakãchala mouli padorjita nirbhara kunjara kumbha kuche, 

jaya jaya he mahishãsura mardini ramya kapardini shaila sute||15|| 

 

The One whose waist is clothed with Silk of Lustrous hues which eclipses even the Brightness of the Moons; Whose Toe Nails reflect the radiance of jewels in the crowns of Devas and Asuras who prostrate before Her. O, the One whose bosom is glowing like the peak of the Golden Mountain (Meru) and like the Kumbhasthala of Airavatha.

The One who eclipsed thousands of Sun Rays by Her own

Thousand Hands, to Whom the Lord Sun prostrates. The One who thought to save the suras by destroying the Tarakasura. For which you gave rise to your son (Karthikeya) and prepared your him for war against demon Tarakasura and thus saved the Devas. Who is pleased with King Suratha's longing for samadhi and his attainment of Samadhi. पदकमलं करुणानिलये वरिवस्यति योऽनुदिनं सुशिवे

अयि कमले कमलानिलये कमलानिलयः स कथं न भवेत् ।

तव पदमेव परम्पदमित्यनुशीलयतो मम किं न शिवे

जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते ॥ १८ ॥

 

Padakamlam karuna nilaye varivasyati yonudinam sa shive, 

ayi kamale kamalã nilaye kamalã nilayah sa katham na bhavet| 

tava padameva parampadamitya anusheelayato mama kim na shive, 

jaya jaya he mahishãsura mardini ramya kapardini shaila sute||17|| 

 

O Goddess of Compassion, dwelling by the side of Lord Shiva, anyone ardently worshipping Your Lotus Feet, O Lotus like Devi Lakshmi, how will they not be blessed by You with prosperity and protection? The divine mother, whose eternal name is the ultimate and unparalleled, I am deeply connected to your words; what I need more, O consort of Shiva? कनकलसत्कलसिन्धुजलैरनुषिञ्चति तेगुणरङ्गभुवम्

भजति स किं न शचीकुचकुम्भतटीपरिरम्भसुखानुभवम् ।

तव चरणं शरणं करवाणि नतामरवाणि निवासि शिवम्

जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते ॥ १९ ॥

 

kanakala satkala sindhu jalairanu sinchinute guňa ranga bhuvam, bhajati sa kim na shachee kucha kumbha taŤee parirambha sukhãnu bhavam| tava charaňam sharaňam karavãňi natãmaravãňi nivãsi shivam, 

jaya jaya he mahishãsura mardini ramya kapardini shaila sute||18|| 

 

Whoever sprinkles Your Abode with sacred waters from a golden vessel will attain Lord Indra by Your Grace. Those will feel the Joy of Your All-Embracing Grace from Your Golden Vessel, the symbol of Your Cosmic Heart. O Consort of Lord Shiva, I bow to You; I take shelter at Your Divine Feet. तव विमलेन्दुकुलं वदनेन्दुमलं सकलं ननु कूलयते

Those who meditate on Your Gloriously Pure and Shining Face, adorned by the Crescent Moon, how can they ever look upon other beautiful faces

like those present in Lord Indra's Abode? How can we achieve the treasure of Shiva's Name within us without Your Grace? Therefore, I invoke You, O Devi. Victory to you, victory to you, the destroyer of Mahishasura, the One with beautiful-braided hair— the daughter of the mountain.

Verse 1 of the Stotram glorifies The Daughter of the Mountain, who brings joy to the World

Verse 2 speaks of the Devi who eliminates the Danavas and the Daityas and Nurtures the Three Worlds

Verse 3 glorifies Devi, the mighty slayer of the Demons- Madhu and Kaitabha

Verse 4 edifies Devi, the mighty slayer of the Demons- Chanda and Munda

Verse 5 speaks of the Devi who sent Lord Shiva as the Messenger to demons Shumbha and Nishumbha

Verse 6 celebrates the Devi who Forgives the Enemy Heroes when their wives choose to be in Her safe sanctuary

Verse 7 glorifies Devi, the mighty slayer of demons- Dhoomralochana, Raktabeeja and Shumbha-Nishumbha

Verse 12 reveres the Devi From Whom Arises all Skills, Beauty and Power

Verse 13 celebrates Devi, Whose Forehead is spotless and pious like a Lotus Petal

Verse 14 oblates the Durga, whose Voice is Sweeter than Flute and Cuckoo of Koel

Verse 15 sings glory of Her Radiant Toe-Nails unto which Demi-Gods and the Demons bow

Verse 16 speaks of Mother Durga, Who is Pleased with Divine Reflection of both: like Suratha and Samadhi

Verse 17 glorifies Devi who is santuary to Devi Mahalakshmi

Verse 18 glorifies Devi who is an abode of Devi Mahasaraswati

Verse 19 oblates the Durga, Whose pious Moon-Like Face quells our impurities

Verse 20 reveres Devi Durga Who bestows grace upon Devotees in an identical manner as She showers the Arrows on Rivals
